Janet's Planet-Usborne Books at Home

Usborne books have an enviable reputation amongst parents and educators for producing the very best in children’s non-fiction titles. Recent top awards won by Usborne include the Rhone-Poulenc Science prize and the Times Education Supplement Senior Information Book award.

Our books

  • are visually exciting and entertaining, as well as informative,
  • are popular with children and parents alike.
  • embrace the whole age range from toddlers to teens
  • subjects covered range from puzzles, art, sports and hobbies to topic books in science and social studies and early reading materials
  • include excellent resource materials for teachers
  • high-quality binding means they are durable in frequent use
  • cover many topics included in the provincial curriculum

Direct School Purchases

On orders over $100 schools receive 20% in free books. We can leave a box of books and/or a catalogue in your staff room so your teachers can also take advantage of this, putting their orders together to obtain the discount. We can also pass on a saving to pupils if, for instance, we make reference books such as the Illustrated Thesaurus available to them for purchase.

Literacy Fairs

These are events aimed at earning free books or funds for organizations such as schools, libraries and other educational groups.

  • The Usborne consultant is responsible for running the display, handling the orders, etc. – our Literacy Fairs are virtually labour-free for the school! The consultant can work in association with the school to help ensure the event is adequately publicized.
  • The minimum sale to qualify as a Literacy Fair is $500.
  • On sales of $500 or more the organization receives 30% in free books (which can be chosen from any titles on our current stock list – about 900 titles to choose from).
  • Under $500 earns 10% in free books.

Read-a-thons

A wonderfully constructive way of fundraising, helping to establish good reading habits! Particularly helpful in schools working to update their library collections or obtain classroom sets of, for example, our Thesaurus.

These can be tailored to fit your school’s needs but typically:

  • our Read-a-thons require virtually no extra work for teachers, fitting in with existing class reading time
  • our Read-a-thons rewards can be taken as cash, books or a combination of both
  • Usborne provides all paperwork and books for incentive prizes for pupils.
